A Look Behind the Scenes: Baymeadows Movers Joins Forces with Chipman and OMA to Remove Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most customers walk into a movie theater with their mind on the movie they're about to see. They notice the giant screen, cozy seats, and maybe the smell of fresh popcorn. What they don't see is everything going on behind the scenes to bring that experience to life—or what it takes when it's time to retire decades of gear and open the door for the future.
Recently, Baymeadows Movers had the opportunity to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a one-of-a-kind commercial moving project through our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). Together, we supported the removal of outdated projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It wasn't your usual commercial move. It required careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between trusted relocation partners.
Moves like these are one of the reasons we love what we do. No two commercial moves are ever exactly alike, and that's what makes our work engaging.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
One of the finest aspects of commercial moving is the variety.
In one week we're relocating an entire school before students return for the new year. The next we're moving physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Next we find ourselves inside a movie theater, carefully dismantling and removing equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was notably memorable because it required removing large digital cinema projection systems, together with several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like stepping back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection was established as the industry standard.
For film fans, it was riveting.
For our crew, it was a reminder that every piece of equipment we move carries its own story.
Great Projects Start with Great Planning
Moves like this do not begin when the moving truck shows up.
Long before the first projector is unplugged, our team carefully coordinates logistics, scheduling, access points, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Working alongside Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we oversaw every phase of the project to ensure each theater could be completed efficiently and safely. One of the greatest advantages of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is having access to a nationwide network of seasoned commercial movers who uphold the same dedication to professionalism and customer service. By blending Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to execute the work seamlessly from start to finish.
Cinemas weren't constructed with equipment removal in mind.
Projection booths tend to be tucked away on upper levels with slim passageways, tight doorways, and limited access. A few sites have elevators, while others do not. Transporting large projection systems through those spaces requires much more than simply putting them on a dolly and wheeling toward the truck.
Every challenge needs to be foreseen before work even begins.
That's when experience makes the difference.
It's About Far More Than Brute Strength
People often assume moving heavy equipment is just about raw strength.
The honest truth is that commercial moving hinges on planning, technique, and using the right tools for the job.
Projects like the AMC equipment removal demand specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and experienced crews who know how to carefully maneuver oversized equipment through tight spaces.
Each projector had to be carefully disconnected, protected, moved through the building, and securely loaded for transport.
Most of these systems are not only heavy—they're also highly delicate. A single careless bump into a doorway or uneven transition can lead to significant damage.
Communication and patience are every bit as important as physical strength.
Preserving the Building Is Just as Important
While our focus is on carefully moving equipment, we're just as committed to protecting the customer's facility.
Commercial properties represent a significant investment, and even modest repairs can prove disruptive and costly.
When a move is finished, our goal is for customers to remember how easy the whole experience felt, not the moving process itself.
Working Together Makes the Difference
Large commercial moving projects are never a single-person task.
Each member of the crew has a specific role, and communication is key from start to finish.
One team member may be guiding equipment through a doorway while another stabilizes the load. Someone else is monitoring clearances, while another crew member is preparing the next piece for transport.
When experienced crews work as a team, there is a rhythm that develops. That's something that can't be taught overnight.
Watching our team work together was a clear example of what happens when seasoned movers share the same commitment to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Levity Along the Way
Even during demanding commercial projects, it's important to appreciate the experience.
Working inside movie theaters definitely had its perks.
Our crew couldn't help heading downstairs for a few movie snacks between project tasks. Having spent the day behind the scenes where few people ever get to go, popcorn somehow tasted even better.
Such moments help make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also have fun doing it.
Commercial Moving Is More Than Transportation
Plenty of people assume moving companies just load trucks and unload them somewhere else.
Commercial moving is so much more than that.
Projects often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, handling of specialized equipment, and coordinating multiple contractors.
Each customer has different needs.
Certain businesses need to relocate hundreds of employees over a single weekend.
Some need sensitive medical equipment transported without disruption.
Some projects take place overnight to limit downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—require carefully removing specialized equipment from unique environments.
Every project requires flexibility, planning, and problem solving.
At Baymeadows Movers, when someone asks, "Can you help with this?" our first response is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has faithfully served Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and we've come to understand that great projects all rely on the same core principles:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll come ready, keep them informed throughout the project, handle their property with care, and fix problems instead of causing them.
Whether we're working inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach remains the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Complete the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Protecting a Piece of Movie History
One of the unforeseen highlights of this project was seeing some of the original 35mm projection systems that once gave life to countless films.
Well before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines created memorable experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Standing beside them gave our crew a true appreciation for how much technology has progressed over the years.
It's not every morning that a moving company gets to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
For us, it really was an experience that we will never forget.
